Purpose
This is a meeting of participants in the eXtended Metadata Registry (XMDR) Project, a collaborative effort involving DOD, EPA, USGS, NCI, and other organizations. The project is to extend the semantics management capabilities of ISO/IEC 11179 metadata registries. The work focuses on extending the semantics management aspects specified in the ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries family of standards as well as demonstrating capabilities in a prototype that adapts and adopts useful emerging technologies. The participants will review progress, discuss technologies, and make plans for the continuing effort.

Participants may stay at the UC Berkeley Faculty Club where we are meeting. The block of rooms is under the name XMDR. This facility is available to the public and rates are somewhat more reasonable than other hotels in Berkeley. There is free wireless access to the Internet throughout most public areas of the Faculty Club and in most of the sleeping rooms. There are a limited number of rooms, some with private baths and some with shared baths. It is located at the east end of campus. There is no parking immediately at the Faculty Club, but some may be arranged some distance away; see the “directions” section, below. Taxi or airport shuttles can drop you off at the Faculty Club.
Other local hotels:
In addition to the blocks of rooms reserved for the meeting, as described above, there are alternate hotels. Participants will have to arrange their own transportation to and from the alternate locations, although some (e.g., Hotel Durant, and Hotel Shattuck Plaza) are within easy walking distance.
Located two blocks east of Telegraph Ave. on Durant Ave. this hotel is located a block south of the LBNL Bancroft Shuttle route, which only runs every half hour. The hotel is nicer, but more expensive than the Shattuck Hotel. BART is a short cab ride or 15 min. walk. NO DSL lines in the rooms. It is close to Telegraph Avenue (shopping and restaurants) and campus. It is a fairly short walk (7 min.) to the UCB Faculty Club.

The hotel is located in downtown Berkeley at the corner of Allston Way and Shattuck Ave, on the southwest corner. It is located one block south of the main Berkeley BART station and the LBNL Hearst Ave. shuttle stop. The hotel is now operated by Howard Johnson hotel chain. The hotel does NOT have DSL lines to the Internet. This is an older, spartan hotel. Its principal attractions are its location in downtown Berkeley and moderate prices.

This is a fairly new hotel, built in 2000, at the west end of University Ave (near San Pablo Ave. and US. 580). The rooms have a microwave and mini-refrigerator. Of particular note is that availability of free high-speed (DSL?) Internet connections. There is fairly frequent bus service on University Ave to downtown Berkeley, from which you can get a shuttle to LBNL or east side of the campus (The Faculty Club). You can walk to the upscale Fourth Street shopping / dining district just northwest of the hotel. This hotel is not as nice as the Doubletree, but it is cheaper and has better public transportation connections.

This hotel is approx. 15 min away by car, it offers nice suites with free DSL lines. It is located next to Emery Bay Public Market (food court, books, movies) and across the tracks from the Emeryville Amtrak Station (there is a pedestrian bridge). You will probably need a car if you stay at the Woodfin. (See above about shuttle/taxi sharing.) LBNL visitors have liked this hotel, but recommend a rental car to get to LBNL/campus.
Directions to Meeting Venue
The meeting will be held in the UC Berkeley Faculty Club, which is located at the east end of the campus.
From Oakland or San Francisco airports, it is suggested that you take the BayPorter Shuttle. See below for details.
If driving you would enter off of Gayley Road on the small road just south of the Haas Business School (and north of the Law School). As you enter the campus you will see a round building on the left (Calvin Lab), Haas Business School on the right, and the Optometry School in front. As you go past the Business School and approach the Optometry School, turn north (right) and drive approximately 80 meters. Turn left onto a narrow, dead-end road. The Faculty Club in located at the end of the road, approximately 10 meters. There are only two 20-minute parking spaces (marked “TFC”) located here. The Faculty Club is a cedar shingled building. Enter the Faculty Club and walk past the dining rooms toward the west end of the building where the reception desk is located. You can purchase a parking permit at the Faculty Club Front Desk for parking elsewhere on campus. However, campus parking is very difficult, even with a parking permit. Parking in a public parking lot may be easier, see information on parking, below. Public transportation or shuttle is highly recommended.
If arriving on BART, get off at the “Berkeley” station. The Faculty Club is about a 10 minute walk directly east (toward the hill). You can also catch a cab or a shuttle, see below.
Site Access to LBNL
Site access to LBNL requires prior arrangements. Note however that we are meeting on UCB campus, not at LBNL. Contact Bruce Bargmeyer at bebargmeyer@lbl.gov or 510-495-2905 if you need site access to LBNL.
Handicapped Access
The UCB Faculty Club is handicapped accessible and has handicapped accessible restrooms. The first day of the meeting will be in Heyns Room, which is handicapped accessible. However, the remainder of the meeting will be held in the Seaborg Room on the second floor, without handicapped access. Contact us immediately if you need handicapped access. At present we have no arrangement for deaf signing.

Parking On and Near Campus
Parking near campus is terrible. (There are probably 35K students and faculty on campus every day and only a few thousand parking spaces in/near campus.) Here are three options for parking:
Get a permit from the Faculty Club for an on-campus parking lot (which possibly has an available parking spot). You can follow the directions to the Faculty Club, and park in one of a couple 20 minute spaces marked "TFC". then go in to the front desk and get a parking permit for $15 per day. They will give you a permit and direct you to park in a parking facility that is less than a 10 minute walk away. These parking lots are often full. Note that the two temporary "TFC" parking spaces are also often full, leaving you at risk while trying to get the permit at the front desk.
Go directly to an on-campus parking lot.
There are two campus owned parking facilities potentially available during the day (they fill up early). They are:

After 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends, hourly public parking is available on all levels until 5 a.m. All U.C. affiliate parking permits are valid under regular night and weekend parking policy. Signs are posted at the pay stations on each level and at the entrance to Level 2. You can also find this information on the Parking and Transportation Web Site under "Public Parking."
Park in a public parking lot in the city, near the campus
There are various public parking lots and facilities near campus and in downtown Berkeley. The list, below, includes municipal and privately owned parking lots and garages open to the public. Please consult signs for hours and fees prior to entering the facilities. These lots are a 10 to 20 minute walk away from the Faculty Club. Note that many of the city lots enforce parking regulations (including max. parking periods) 24 hours per day.

The closest major public parking garage is located at on the south side of Durant Ave. (1 block south of Bancroft Way) approximately 30 meters west of Telegraph Ave. Note that Durant Ave. is a one-way street eastbound. This garage is a concrete structure with red brick infill and bright orange structural steel bracing.
Shuttles, Cabs from Berkeley BART to Faculty Club
From the main Berkeley BART station exit via the rotunda. The Faculty Club is a 10 minute walk to the east (toward the hill). Cabs are located directly on Center Street adjoining the BART station. Campus shuttles to east campus can be found in front the Bank of America building diagonally across Center and Shattuck from the BART station. There is a nominal charge (50 cents) for non-students. The shuttles run approx. every 10 minutes from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The internal campus shuttles will drop you at the Hearst Mining Circle. The UCB Faculty Club is approx. 1 block south from the bus stop - immediately south of Strawberry Creek. There are also perimeter campus shuttles and reverse perimeter campus shuttles which stop along Gayley Road at the eastern border of the campus. Do not board the LBNL shuttles - they do not go to the Faculty Club.

Airports, Airlines
San Francisco airport is located approx. 40 minutes southwest (off peak) of Berkeley. It is the principal airport for the Bay Area. United has the most flights. If flying nonstop from the East Coast, you will probably wind up at SFO. If flying nonstop from Europe or Asia you will undoubtedly land at SFO. Note that SFO now has BART service.
Oakland Airport is a smaller airport approx. 25 min. (off peak) south of Berkeley. Serves the West Coast, Denver, Chicago and (recently) Washington, DC, Boston, and JFK at New York City.
Ground transportation between Airports and Berkeley
Both rental cars and shuttles are available at both SFO and Oakland airports. Shuttles to Berkeley run approx. $30 (to downtown Berkeley) from SFO, $27 (to downtown Berkeley) $29 from Oakland airport. Consult the airport ground transportation web pages or see the discussion of BayPorter Express Shuttle below (a popular shuttle to Berkeley).
BART now runs to SFO and stops in downtown Berkeley. Coming from SFO on non-peak hours, you will have to transfer once in downtown Oakland to a northbound Richmond train. Going to SFO you will need to transfer to a SFO bound train at McArthur station (i.e., take any southbound train from Berkeley). Taxi from SFO to downtown Berkeley (including tip) runs $60-65.
There is an AIR BART shuttle between the Oakland Airport and the Coliseum BART station (about $2) or a taxi to BART (about $8) or a taxi to downtown Berkeley (about $45 including tip). If taking BART be sure to take the northbound Richmond train from Coliseum station to downtown Berkeley, or the southbound Fremont train from Berkeley to Coliseum.
If you need to get to the Faculty Club from the airport, many visitors to LBNL/campus have used the BayPorter Express Shuttle , which serves Berkeley directly from the San Francisco airport and rarely takes you other places to drop off people first. The BayPorter trip from the Oakland airport may stop for drop-offs in Oakland, before going to Berkeley, but it is still usually fast. It costs about $30 from SFO to Berkeley, plus tip, if you like.
No reservations are needed to take Bay Porter from the airport to the Faculty Club, a hotel, home, etc. Thus, there is no need to call BayPorter Shuttle to make advance reservations before you leave on your flight. Reservations are needed in the other direction, i.e., to have BayPorter pick you up from a hotel, home, etc. to take you to the airport.
BayPorter wants you to call them when you get in to the airport, but after you have collected your bags. Call 877-467-1800 or (877) 864-4000 and tell BayPorter that you are at the airport (specify the Oakland or San Francisco airport) and that you want to go to Berkeley. They will ask which airline you came in on and will tell you where to go to get picked up. (At SFO, you do not go up one floor to where most of the vans pick up people. You usually go to a small parking lot near the United baggage area--or another airline's baggage area). The van is GREEN and usually comes within 10 minutes.
You can also go to the BayPorter web site (see above) and make reservations online (for a slight discount).
Tell the driver that you want to go to the Faculty Club on the UC Berkeley Campus. Many drivers know where it is, but not all. I highly recommend that you print the directions to the Faculty Club. Find them at: Directions to UC Berkeley Faculty Club Note that the directions include the telephone number for the Faculty Club (510) 540-5678. The person at the front desk should be able to guide the driver to the Faculty Club, if the driver gets lost. It is a bit of a challenge to find the way.
Rail Transportation into Berkeley
Amtrak runs the Capitol Corridor Train between Sacramento and San Jose. You can transfer easily between Amtrak and BART at the Richmond station (the stations are side by side). Then get off at the downtown Berkeley BART station and follow directions for the LBNL shuttles, i.e., take the Hearst shuttle and transfer either at Euclid (to the Bancroft shuttle) or at Bldg. 65 (to the on site shuttle). Note that many of the Amtrak "trains" are actually buses (and get stuck in traffic). Many of trains (but not the buses) have accommodations for bicycles.

Power, Networking, Audio Visual Equipment
We will provide an XGA resolution video projector in the conference room. We will also provide an easel and a large paper tablet.
There will be power strips provided for all participants. The power plugs will be conventional U.S. 120V 3 prong (grounded) outlets.
The faculty club provides wireless access point (802.11b/g). We will supply you with the network SSID. There will be no wired Ethernet ports or phone lines for users, except in the lodging rooms at the Women’s Faculty Club and the Doubletree. Please bring your own 802.11b/g wireless access cards.
There are no plans at present to provide a printer.
Weather
Weather in Berkeley in mid-August is usually warm, but could turn chilly. Rain is unusual in August. Evening / morning air temperatures will likely be between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Banking, ATMs
On the south side of campus there are 4 ATMs located at Telegraph and Durant Ave. on the northeast corner at the Bank of America. There are also 6 ATMS located on the former Wells Fargo Bank, located on Bancroft Way (southern edge of campus) approx. 40 meters west of Telegraph Ave. (i.e., between Telegraph Ave. and Dana St.).
Downtown the Wells Fargo Bank has 6 ATMs at Center and Shattuck (across from the BART station). On the Northeast corner of Center and Shattuck is a Bank of America with several ATMs. There is a Citibank branch downtown on the corner of Shattuck Ave (west side) and University Avenue. There are several other banks (e.g., Union Bank, Mechanics Bank, Washington Mutual, ...) downtown with ATM machines.
There are Wells Fargo Bank ATMs in the Oakland Airport and both Wells Fargo and Bank of America ATMs in the SFO airport (mostly B of A). All Andronico's grocery stores in Berkeley have Wells Fargo Bank ATMs. Most Safeway's also have Wells Fargo ATMs. Most Albertson's have Bank of America ATMs.

Berkeley has a plethora of good restaurants and pubs. South of campus eateries are generally inexpensive and mediocre. Most of the better restaurants are on Shattuck, north of campus, or Solano Ave. See below.
