| Thur.-Fri., Oct. 14-15, 2004 | Project Meeting |
This is a quarterly meeting of the Extend Metadata Registry (XMDR) Project for a collaborative effort involving DOD, EPA, USGS, NCI, the Mayo Clinic, and other organizations to extend the semantics management capabilities of ISO/IEC 11179 metadata registries. The work focuses on extending the classification and terminology aspects specified in the ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries family of standards, adapting and adopting useful emerging technologies for a prototype implementation that will be used for tests and demonstrations. It is intended to assure that the continuing development of the standard meets the needs of the collaborators. The participants, including program sponsors, will review progress, discuss possible technologies, and make plans for the coming quarter. The first day is devoted to presentations and discussions with vendors of technologies which may be used in the prototype implementation.

Site access to LBNL requires prior arrangements. Contact Deborah Haynes via email dlhaynes@lbl.gov or call her at 510-486-6586.
Perseverance Hall is handicapped accessible and has handicapped accessible restrooms. There is a small elevator from the cafeteria parking lot to the main level of the cafeteria - and hence to Perseverance Hall.
Contact Deborah Haynes (see below) in order to obtain a parking permit. You must do this ahead of the meeting. Also note that only marked parking spaces are legal.
From the downtown Berkeley BART station (rotunda/escalators), walk north across the street to the Wells Fargo Bank Building. LBNL shuttles stop here every 10 min. (20 min. after 6:00 PM). Take the shuttle to Bldg. 65 at LBNL (only stop), and then transfer to the on site shuttle. Ask to be dropped at the cafeteria.
There is no workshop registration fee.
Attendees are responsible for making their own hotel reservations.
We anticipate that most of the visitors for this meeting will stay at this hotel. A block of rooms was reserved, but the window for these reservations has closed. This is nice, modern hotel located at the Berkeley Marina, about 15 min. drive from LBNL. DSL lines are available in some rooms, for $10/night extra. You probably need a car (or use a taxi) to stay here. Fourth Street shopping/dining district is nearby via shuttle/cab. To get to/from LBNL via public transit take the 51M AC Transit Bus to/from the marina (about 2 blocks south of the hotel) to the downtown Berkeley BART station and connect to the LBNL Hearst Ave. shuttle. The hotel has an on site restaurant. It is on the opposite side of town from LBNL and remote from downtown, campus, and Telegraph Ave. This was formerly the Berkeley Radisson. LBNL visitors generally seem to like the hotel, except for the distance to LBNL. See the reviews at Trip Advisor Site for Berkeley Doubletree Marina Hotel The hotel has an hourly shuttle to nearby locations (at least the BART Station).
This hotel is approx. 15 min away by car, it offers nice suites with free DSL lines (!). It is located next to Emery Bay Public Market (food court, books, movies) and across the tracks from the Emeryville Amtrak Station (there is a pedestrian bridge). You will probably need a car if you stay at the Woodfin. (See above about shuttle/taxi sharing.) LBNL visitors have liked this hotel, but recommend a rental car to get to LBNL.
This facility is available to the public and rates are somewhat more reasonable than other hotels in Berkeley. There is no high-speed Internet access, but dial-up access is available. There are a limited number of rooms, some with private baths and some with shared baths. It is located at the east end of campus. There is no parking immediately at the Faculty Club, but some may be arranged some distance away. Taxi or airport shuttles can drop you off at the Faculty Club. You can walk to the LBNL Hearst Ave. shuttle stop at in front of Cory Hall or you can take the LBNL Bancroft shuttle at the East Entrance to campus. Ask directions at the desk.
The hotel is located in downtown Berkeley at the corner of Allston Way and Shattuck Ave, on the southwest corner. It is located one block south of the main Berkeley BART station and the LBNL Hearst Ave. shuttle stop. The hotel is now operated by Howard Johnson hotel chain. The hotel does NOT have DSL lines to the Internet. This is an older, spartan hotel. Its principal attractions are its location in downtown Berkeley and moderate prices.
Located two blocks east of Telegraph Ave. on Durant Ave. this hotel is located a block south of the LBNL Bancroft Shuttle route, which only runs every half hour. The hotel is somewhat nicer, but more expensive than the Shattuck Hotel. BART is a short cab ride or 15 min. walk. NO DSL lines in the rooms. It is close to Telegraph Avenue (shopping and restaurants) and campus.
San Francisco airport is located approx. 40 minutes southwest (off peak) of Berkeley. It is the principal airport for the Bay Area. United has the most flights. If flying nonstop from the East Coast you will probably wind up at SFO.
Both rental cars and shuttles are available at both SFO and Oakland airports. Shuttles to Berkeley run approx. $25 (to downtown Berkeley) $35 (to LBNL) from SFO, $20 (to downtown Berkeley) $27 (to LBNL) from Oakland airport.
BART now runs to SFO and stops in downtown Berkeley. Coming from SFO you will have to transfer once in downtown Oakland to a northbound Richmond train. Going to SFO you will need to transfer to a SFO bound train at McArthur station (i.e., take any southbound train from Berkeley). Taxi from SFO to downtown Berkeley (including tip) runs $60-65. You can also take a shuttle ($12) or taxi ($30) between SFO and the Embarcadero BART station in SF and then take BART to Berkeley. Transfer at 12 Street Station in Oakland to the Richmond train.
There is a (rather sluggish) AIR BART shuttle between the Oakland Airport and the Coliseum BART station ($2) or a taxi to BART ($8) or a taxi to downtown Berkeley ($42 including tip). If taking BART be sure to take the northbound Richmond train from Coliseum station to downtown Berkeley, or the southbound Fremont train from Berkeley to Coliseum.
Amtrak runs the Capitol Corridor Train between Sacramento and San Jose. You can transfer between Amtrak and BART at the Richmond station. Then get off at the downtown Berkeley BART station and follow directions for the LBNL shuttles, i.e., take the Hearst shuttle and transfer either at Euclid (to the Bancroft shuttle) or at Bldg. 65 (to the on site shuttle). Note that many of the Amtrak "trains" are actually buses (and get stuck in traffic). Many of trains (but not the buses) have accommodations for bicycles.
We will provide a video projector in the conference room.
There will be power strips provided for all participants. The power plugs will be conventional U.S. 120V 3 prong (grounded) outlets.
We plan to provide one wireless access point (802.11b). We will supply you with the network SSID and password upon arrival. There will be no wired Ethernet ports or phone lines for users. Please bring your own 802.11b wireless access cards, as we will not provide them.
There are no plans at present to provide a printer.
Weather in Berkeley in mid-October can be quite variable. It will probably be chilly. Evening / morning air temperatures will likely be between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit, 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. Afternoon air temperatures will likely be between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. Rain is unlikely, but possible. It never snows in Berkeley in October. If we are lucky, it may be somewhat warmer. Detailed forecasts are available at the following sites.
October is still fire season in Berkeley. The hills are highly combustible, especially on hot, dry, windy days. The Berkeley/Oakland Hills Fire of Oct. 20, 1991 killed 25 persons, injured 150 persons, destroyed some 2,900 housing units and did $1.5M damage. It is illegal to light any fires in the hills this time of year. At LBNL, the fire department can be reached by call extension 7911 . Fire exits in Perserverance Hall are located along the east wall and north corridor, there is a set of stairs leading up hill away from Perseverance Hall and the cafeteria.
Visitors are advised of the several major traffic hazards in Berkeley near the campus. Also note that LBNL generally does not deploy reflectors on the roadbed or barriers.
Pedestrian safety is a major problem in Berkeley resulting in high rates of pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Pedestrians in Berkeley frequently cross streets without regard to oncoming traffic (or traffic lights). This occurs especially in the vicinity of the campus on Hearst Ave between Euclid Ave., along Gayley Road and on Bancroft Ave. The absence of adequate sidewalks at LBNL (and along portions of Hearst Ave.) often leads pedestrians (or joggers) to walk or run on the pavement.
There are also numerous bicyclists (many reckless and poorly lit) in Berkeley and at LBNL. Note that Gayley Road (especially), Centennial Drive and many LBNL roads are largely devoid of shoulders - expect to see bicyclists on the main road bed. Most (sane) bicyclists use flashing red LED lights at night.
More seriously (for drivers), there are numerous large construction trucks (cement trucks and dump trucks mostly) currently operating in the vicinity of campus due to extensive ongoing construction. Especially, note the heavy truck traffic on on Gayley Road, emerging from the east entrance to the UC Berkeley campus. These trucks often do not stop for pedestrians, bicyclists, or autos.
Also note that the city of Berkeley has a problem with motor vehicles running red lights and stop signs. Cameras are currently being installed at some intersections.
For medical emergencies at LBNL dial extension 7911, we have an on site medical facility, which operates from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The nearest hospital is Alta Bates Medical Center - Ashby Campus. Alta Bates has an emergency room and is located on Ashby Avenue just east of Telegraph Avenue. Trauma cases go to the trauma center at Highland Hospital approximately 20-30 minutes south of Berkeley (in an ambulance, with no traffic jam). The Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center is a major hospital (with emergency room, but no trauma facility) located at MacArthur Blvd. and Broadway St. in Oakland, approx. 4 km south of LBNL.
There is a modest Walgren's drugstore diagonally across from the Shattuck Hotel at the northeast corner of Allston and Shattuck. They have a pharmacist during the day. There is a larger "natural" pharmacy, Elephant Pharmacy located at 1607 Shattuck (south of Andronico's) at the SE corner of Cedar Ave. Elephant Pharmacy has a larger selection and is open later. It is approx. 8 blocks north of Center and Shattuck. There is a 24 hours pharmacy, Walgren's, located at 51st and Telegraph in Oakland.
There is a Safeway located on Shattuck Ave., between Vine and Rose Streets, approx. 10 blocks north of Center and Shattuck. There is an Andronico's located at Shattuck and Cedar, approx 8 blocks north of Center and Shattuck. It is an upscale grocery store, deli, and bakery. Both stores sell wines and liquor. Both stores are open until 11 PM.
There is an ATM located 30 meters north of the LBNL Cafeteria (Bldg 54) in a small hut at the edge of parking lot K1. There is also a US mail box located there.
Downtown the Wells Fargo Bank has 6 ATMs at Center and Shattuck (across from the BART station). On the Northeast corner of Center and Shattuck is a Bank of America with several ATMs. There is are two Citibank branches downtown - one on Shattuck (west side), just south of University Avenue and one further south on Shattuck (east side). There are several other banks (e.g., Union Bank, Mechanics Bank, Washington Mutual, ...) downtown with ATM machines. In the south campus there are ATMs at the Bank of America (NE corner of Durant and Telegraph) and at the former Wells Fargo Bank branch (40 meters west of Bancroft of Telegraph).
There are Wells Fargo Bank ATMs in the Oakland Airport and both Wells Fargo and Bank of America ATMs in the SFO airport (mostly B of A). All Andronico's grocery stores in Berkeley have Wells Fargo Bank ATMs. Most Safeway's have WFB ATMs. Most Albertson's have B of A ATMs.
The closest gas station to campus is located at the SW corner of Fulton (a.k.a Oxford) and Durant Ave. just southwest of the campus. Fulton/Oxford is located one block east of Shattuck Ave. It is (an expensive) Shell station - gas only, no diesel. It closes at 8:30 or 9:00 PM at night. There is also a hybrid gas station and car wash located a few blocks north on Fulton at Allston. Both of these gas stations have candy, cookies, drinks, etc. There is also a gas station at Telegraph and Ashby south of the campus (Union 76 I think).
There is a laundromat on Shattuck Ave., J and L Laundry and Cleaning at 2520 Shattuck Ave., just south of Dwight Street on the west side of the street. This is approximately 7 short blocks south of Center and Shattuck, 6 blocks south of the Shattuck Hotel. Tel: 510-848-1730.
We will expect to provide a light breakfast (fruit and carbs), morning coffee, and an afternoon snack each day of the meeting. Breakfast and lunch can be purchased at the adjoining LBNL cafeteria. Breakfast is served from 6:30 AM to 9:10 AM, lunch is served to from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM (for the grill), 1:15 PM for sandwiches.
We anticipate that efforts will be made to organize a no-host dinner in downtown Berkeley on Wednesday night. Bruce Bargmeyer will likely host a dinner at his home on Thursday. Attendees will be on their own for Friday night (if any remain).
Berkeley has a plethora of good restaurants and pubs. See below.
